Groups hope to raise community housing awareness

Community housing week set to commence Tuesday, Sept. 25

The need for affordable community housing in Blaine County will be the focus of a weeklong series of events starting Tuesday, Sept. 25.

Taking part in the 2007 Community Housing week from Sept. 25-28 will be local community housing advocacy groups, businesses and government officials. Below is a schedule of events:

Tuesday, Sept. 25:

· Noon—Meeting your inclusionary zoning requirements. This seminar is designed for developers, real estate agents and architects. The discussion will be held at the Roosevelt Tavern in Ketchum.

· 5:30 p.m.—Understanding the process of the workforce housing priority list. Community volunteer Cygnia Rapp will lead this discussion in Hailey at the Liberty Theatre. Attendees will be placed in a drawing for a ski pass, gym membership and restaurant gift certificates.

Wednesday, Sept. 26:

· Noon—Employee recruitment and retention workshop. Housing expert Dan Hoffman will lead this talk at Ketchum's nexStage Theatre. Attendees will be placed in a drawing for a ski pass.

· 1:30 p.m.—Deed restricted housing tour in Ketchum following the noon workshop.

· 7 p.m.—Student visual, performing, music and film art competition. The competition will be held at Hailey's Liberty Theatre. More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded.

Thursday, Sept. 27:

· 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—Statewide coalition workshop led by Washington, D.C.-based Homes for Working Families. The workshop will be held at the Old Blaine County Courthouse in Hailey.

· Noon—New workforce deed restriction. This discussion will be held in Ketchum at the Roosevelt Tavern.

· 7 p.m.—Screening of healthy community films "Save Our Land, Save Our Town" and "Lost People of Mountain Village." The event will be held in Ketchum at the nexStage Theatre.

Friday, Sept. 28:

· 10 a.m.—Community housing trusts: How they work and how they help. Colin Bloch, director of homeownership at the Champlain Housing Trust, will lead this discussion. The event will be held at the Hailey Community Campus.

· Noon—Employee recruitment and retention (repeat of Wednesday workshop in Ketchum). The workshop will be held at the Hailey Community Campus.

· 5:30 p.m.—ARCH membership meeting. This meeting will be held at the home of the ARCH executive director. A ski pass drawing will take place.
