Alexa Turzian, an 18-year-old Sun Valley skier, shocked the skiing world Thursday by winning the women's 10k freestyle race at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Houghton, Mich.

"It is so crazy," said Sun Valley Junior Nordic team coach Rick Kapala. "She beat everybody—the U.S. Ski teamers—everybody."

In a two-lap race, Turzian was 10 seconds down on the first lap, but pulled away on the second to beat USST racer Kikkan Randall and Rossignol's Karen Camenisch. Official times were not yet available.

"Some people are able to keep it simple on race day. Alexa is one of those people," Kapala said. "A national championship for a junior racer from Sun Valley. Unbelievable."
