The Wood River Wolverines played tough in the first half, but the host Filer Wildcats pulled away after intermission and prevailed 50-28 in an early-season girls' high school basketball game Tuesday night.
Filer (1-1), coming off a 40-point loss to American Falls last weekend, nursed a 17-16 half-time lead before outscoring the visiting Wolverines (0-1) by a 33-12 count after the half. Junior Shanae Astle (15 points) and sophomore Haley Ramseyer (12) topped Filer (16-for-21 free throws).
Scoring for Wood River were junior Kristen Miniard (8 points including two 3-pointers), senior Jamie Stone (7 points), sophomore Lauren Morgenthaler (6), Jordan Scanlon (4), LeighAndra Roberts (2) and Cyndi Ochoa (1).
Wood River travels to play pre-season Great Basin Conference West favorite Jerome tonight, Friday. Jerome (1-1) defeated Pocatello 51-33 Tuesday night for its first win.
