Bringing an eight-week National Shooting Sports Foundation summer program to a successful conclusion, a team of six local boys competed in the State Championship Sporting Clays Shoot Aug. 26-28 at Western Wings in Roberts, Idaho.
Nationally-ranked shooters Gary and Mari McStay of Bellevue coached the youth team comprised of kids ages 13-16. It is the first Idaho Sporting Clays Team to be with the Scholastic Clay Target Program.
The teenagers were, on the Team Willow Creek champion team, Kevin Chin, Amos Brown and Jordan Vert, and on the Team Willow Creek runner-up squad, Luke Brown, Thomas Cameron and Jake Christiansen.
Individually at the state championship, Kevin Chin was the State Sub-Junior champion. Amos Brown placed third in the State Sub-Junior class, and Houston Shaw was third in the Idaho State Junior division.
The Scholastic Clay Target Program is designed to provide school-age participants with the chance to showcase their competitive shooting skills and earn state and national recognition. Along the way the youngsters learn safe firearms handling, commitment, responsibility, leadership and teamwork.
The program is a cooperative effort of the National Shooting Sports Foundation—the firearm industry's largest trade association—along with the governing bodies for trapshooting, skeet shooting and sporting clays in the U.S.
