Grindle moves up, second at Robie Creek

Grant Folske is men’s runner-up

Ketchum-based runners climbed the podium of Saturday’s 26th annual Race to Robie Creek, a 13.1-mile half marathon run in mild weather under cloudless skies near Boise.

Gretchen Grindle, 24, moved up 52 places in the overall rankings compared to last year and ended up as the women’s runner-up behind winner Tiffany Larson, 36, of Boise.

Larson won her second Robie Creek race in three years with a time of 1.32:49, good for 36th overall. There were 2,408 finishers in the popular race—1,097 women and 1,311 men.

Grindle was the big story. She improved her time by five minutes and 11 seconds and also rose six places in the women’s rankings compared to her 2002 effort. Grindle’s final time was 1:35.42, 45th overall.

Meanwhile, 26-year-old Grant Folske of Ketchum (1.18:12) sliced six minutes off last year’s time and ended up just four seconds on the heels of Robie Creek men’s king Alan Newton, 40, of Boise (1.18:08).

The half marathon climbed the eight-mile, 4,797-foot Aldape Summit from Fort Boise to the Robie Creek picnic area.

Placing second in her class and ending up as the seventh woman overall was Hailey’s Katie Nasvik, 32. Her final time was 1.40:44, in 90th overall.

In the top 40 overall were Sam Smith (1.32:11) and Chris Abbott (1.32:39).

Besides Grindle, Folske, Smith and Abbott, there were 15 other Wood River Valley runners in the field—and many had significant time improvements from last year.

Patti Williams of Ketchum improved 13:34, Dave Keir was 7:08 faster, Gadrie Edmunds 7:04 and Greg Wilt 3:37.
