Music workshops culminate with
performance
Over 130 students to participate in
free, five-day workshops
The 7th Annual Sun Valley Summer Music
Workshops, sponsored by the Sun Valley Summer Symphony in cooperation with
Blaine County music educators, will be held Monday through Friday, Aug. 2-6, at
The Community School in Sun Valley.
Artistic Director Virginia Allen, a
faculty member at The Juilliard School, and workshop coordinator Sara Gorby
expect over 130 elementary, middle and high school student musicians to
participate in the free, five-day workshop.
The students will study with musicians
from the SVSS, the SVSS Music Conservatory and other regional music schools in
daily master classes, coaching sessions and ensemble rehearsals.
Classes are offered in string, woodwind,
brass and percussion instruments, and in piano, voice, harp, composition and
music enrichment. Some of the musicians who will be instructing include Geoffrey
Trabichoff, James Dahlgren, Gretchen Van Hoesen, Wendy Max and Sarah Kowitz.
Originally conceived as a program for
Blaine County music students seven years ago, the workshops have grown from 35
students in its first year to an enrollment of over 130 students this year.
The students will have an opportunity to
perform in one of two concerts on Friday, Aug. 6. The 3 p.m. concert will
include the Prelude Orchestra, Concert Choir, Woodwind Ensemble and piano
students of all levels. The 6:30 p.m. concert will feature advanced and
intermediate students on piano and in the Chorale, the Chamber Music Ensemble
and the Sun Valley Youth Orchestra. The evening concert will conclude with the
Sun Valley Youth Orchestra and Chorus performing a special arrangement of
Handel’s "Hallelujah Chorus."
