Wolverines bag third team title
Trip to state on the line today
The Wood River golf team put the
finishing touches on the regular season with a first-place finish at The
Valley Club Tuesday.
Playing without #2 golfer Scott
Sanders (school-related test), the Wolverines parlayed a four-man 343
into a first place finish in a field of five. It is the third time the
Wolverines won a meet this season.
Hailey defeated runner-up and
district rival Filer by 10 strokes. Wendell was third with a 362. Oakley
(392) finished fourth and Gooding (395) fifth.
Wood River’s Tate Mills and Jesse
Theide tied with Kevin Oden of Wendell for first place. All three carded
83’s on the par 72 course.
"For Jesse, a freshman, to shoot
an 83, that is just an awesome score," coach John Braafladt said.
The wins marked the fifth time
(out of six starts) the medalist has been a Wolverine.
Alex Bliss came in sixth with an
86. Brady Bever shot 91 and Cooper McCroskey 93.
The Wolverine girls bested Gooding
472-480 to take the team title.
Wendell’s Jessie Lancaster shot a
stellar 87 to claim the individual title. Britt Van Paepeghem was fourth
overall at 108. Rachel Pace hit 119, Lisa Feldhusen 121, and Adrianna
Maniere 124.
The 3A-district tournament is at
9:30 a.m. today at Burley Municipal Golf Course. Wood River, Buhl,
Kimberly, Filer, Gooding and Declo will compete.
According to Braafladt the top two
teams and top six individuals will qualify for the 3A-state tournament,
May 17-18. Another way to earn a trip to Coeur d’Alene is for the team
to shoot a combined 325 or lower. "We have a great chance for individual
girls and boys to qualify and a great chance for the boys team-wise,"
Braafladt said.
