Fury takes two
in Boise
Women’s hockey buoyed
by strong netminder
In a five-team field at the Boise Harvest
Women’s Hockey Tournament, the Sun Valley Fury went 2-2 last weekend.
The wins, both from dramatic shootouts,
were supported by the strong goaltending of Joanie Fox.
In game one against the Boise Gold
Diggers, the Fury was down two goals with only three minutes remaining when
Jenny Gatehouse scored, assisted by Jen Douglas. Inspired, Douglas then took an
assist from Jini Griffith and scored the game-tying goal.
In the energized shootout, Fury goalie Fox
was a wall, allowing no goals and helping her team cruise to a 4-2 victory.
Game-winning goals in the shootout came from Mia Edsall and Nancy Parsons-Brown.
Game two was another shootout win with Fox
robbing Jackson of any chance for overtime goals. Tied 2-2 going into the
shootout, the regular-time goals came from Douglas and Gatehouse again. Jini
Griffith had the game winner in the shootout for a final 3-2 win.
Game three was a last-minute loss to
Jackson. Just as it seemed the teams would be headed to a second consecutive
shootout, Jackson put in the game winner handing the Fury a tough 3-2 setback.
In the final game of the weekend
tournament, the Fury looked to revenge their lone home loss of last spring to
the Wasatch (Utah) Wings. But, the Wings skated strong and bested the Fury yet
again.
The weekend saw some strong skating and
goaltending.
Leading scorers for the Fury were Jen
Douglas (5 goals/2 assists), Jenny Gatehouse (2/1), Nancy Parsons-Brown (1/2),
Liza Weekes (0/3), Jini Griffith (1/1), Mia Edsall (1/0), Kris Josey (0/1) and
Laura Blash (0/1). Other skaters were Jenny Conrad, Suzanne Connor and Lolly
Greeninger.
