Lefty’s hosts men’s soccer tourney
27th annual Ketchum Classic this
weekend
Get ready to watch some of the best men’s
soccer players in the Intermountain West this weekend on two fields at Ketchum’s
Atkinson Park.
Lefty’s F.C. will host the 27th annual
Ketchum Classic men’s soccer tournament Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-10. Twelve
teams from Idaho, Utah, Montana and Washington are expected for round-robin
play.
Defending champion and the winner of two
Ketchum tournaments in three years is Park City (Utah), which beat Jackson Hole
(Wyo.) 2-1 in the 2002 title game. Lefty’s F.C. last won its own tournament in
2001, by a 1-0 score over Park City.
Lefty’s F.C., which played competitively
but went only 2-1 during its previous tournaments this summer in Utah and
Wyoming, has every intention of winning the Ketchum tournament this weekend.
Midfielder Kurt Funkhouser said, "We’re
playing for the trophy and we’re playing for pride. We’ll be disappointed if we
don’t win this tournament. We’ve been close in each tournament we’ve played."
Lefty’s F.C. plays its two preliminary
games Saturday against Forest (Utah) at 11 a.m. and Boise United at 6 p.m. The
tournament barbecue sponsored by Lefty’s Bar & Grill starts about 5 p.m.
Saturday.
Games on both fields will be played
Saturday at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. The winning
teams in the four groups will be matched in Sunday’s semi-final action at 11
a.m. on two fields.
