Hungry
for ice hockey, the Sun Valley Sunsets and Fury women’s teams whetted
their appetites at the Boise Halloween Hockey Tournament at Ice World in
Boise, Oct. 25-27.
In a
field of 10 teams, the Sunsets skated to second place. Fury finished
fourth.
Sunsets
assistant coach Wendy Speth said, "We played solid, fundamental
hockey with a lot of good teamwork."
The
Sunsets lone blemish on the weekend was a 4-2 loss to the Boise Blades
in the championship game. The Sunsets out-shot Boise 12-9 and rang the
post several times.
"We
couldn’t buy a goal. It was frustrating," Speth said.
In the
first period, Edith Iler scored off a pass from Christl Holzl and Sarah
Benson to put the Sunsets on the scoreboard. Boise scored twice in the
second and once in the third for a 3-1 advantage.
Larsen
Peterson converted (Holzl/Sheila Naghsh) to cut the lead to two goals,
but time ran out on the Sunsets’ bid.
Earlier
Sunday morning, the Sunsets blanked the Fury 6-0.
Despite
landing in the loss column, Fury forward Dotty Sarchett was upbeat.
"We surprised ourselves. We hung with them," Sarchett said.
The
Sunsets (4-1) and goalie Karen Morrison shut out every team they played
and outshot opponents 125-35. Sun Valley tied Boise Blades 0-0 and
blanked Salt Lake 7-0, Jackson Hole 5-0 and Fury 6-0.
Christl
Holzl led the Sunsets with 4 goals and 4 assists.
