Friday's
Wood
River game
Wood River (0-2)
at Glenns Ferry (2-1)
Time—7:00
Friday, Sept. 20. Place—Glenns Ferry.
Last week—2A
Glenns Ferry (2-1), last year’s state runner-up, bounced back from an
upset 24-20 home loss to Filer with a solid 29-0 non-league triumph over
3A Gooding (0-2). Gooding has now been outscored 89-6.
Significance—Final
non-league weekend. Unbeaten at home last year, Glenns Ferry is seeking
its first home win behind the passing of senior Scot Uhl and the
receiving of Zach Simons.
Coach
Blackman’s comments about Glenns Ferry—"Our
power running game is coming along, but we’ve got to get the other
tools to loosen up the defense. Glenns Ferry will bring everyone to stop
the run. We expect to see a 6-2, so we’ll have to get some passing. On
offense, Glenns Ferry ran the shotgun and threw the ball 80% of the time
against Filer. It will be a real test for our secondary. We’ll spend a
lot of time in practice covering the pass."
Key for
Wood River—Scoring
in the first half and keeping the Pilots off the board. Wood River hasn’t
scored before intermission, but has outscored its two opponents 40-27
after intermission.
Last year—On
an emotional Homecoming Night, three days after the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks, Wood River outlasted previously unbeaten Glenns Ferry 42-34 in
a wild game that featured 11 TDs and 1,196 yards in total offense. The
difference was Wood River’s running game, which outrushed the Pilots
463 to 49 and controlled the ball 34 of 48 minutes. Wolverine senior RB
Christian Ayala (3 TD) recorded 160 of his game-high 216 rushing yards
after halftime. To be fair, Glenns Ferry was playing without some of its
best players like eventual 2A "Player of the Year" Korey Hall,
who were out with injuries. Glenns Ferry (8-4 last year, 14-6 two years)
started getting its players back, regrouped, won five straight games and
lost to Lapwai 12-7 in the State 2A championship game.
Two years
ago—At
Glenns Ferry, the Pilots erased an early 13-0 deficit and won 22-13 as
6-0, 222-pound Korey Hall rushed for 145 of his game-high 162 yards and
2 TD in the second half.
History—The
last two varsity football meetings between the schools were the first
times they have played since 1974. In 14 games played from 1960 to 1974,
Hailey held a slim 7-6-1 advantage (5-2-1 home, 2-4 away).
Other
games last week—Buhl
won 42-7 at American Falls; Burley defeated Declo 21-14; Wendell
shrugged off injuries to key players and outlasted Kimberly 38-18; and
visiting Valley blanked Filer 20-0.
Games
this week—This
is the final week of non-league games for SCIC teams. Buhl (1-1) goes to
Middleton; Declo (1-1) entertains American Falls; Kimberly (0-2) goes to
Valley (2-0); Wendell (2-0) hosts Gooding (0-2); and Filer (1-1)
entertains Payette.
