Pride taking
hold
at WRHS
There’s
a new sense of pride taking hold at Wood River High School.
The
student body is growing, an attractive new school is under construction
and topnotch new sports facilities are beginning to open.
A sense
of excitement permeated the Homecoming football game last week. It was
like nothing seen in the Wood River Valley for a long, long time.
Between
2,500 and 3,000 spectators filled the stands—a record for Wood River.
People from all over the valley drove, walked or biked to the new
stadium—a real bowl like no other school field in Idaho.
The crowd
looked on as the new Homer Field, named after former school district
superintendent Phil Homer, was dedicated.
They
watched while what may be the best-disciplined Wolverine team in years
took the field. The really fine student jazz band backed up a live-wire
group of cheerleaders who quickly helped the crowd figure out how to
create an enormous roar on the kickoff.
In the
unseasonably warm night under new lights—the shadows of the old days
are history—the mixed crowd of students and supporters settled in to
watch the Wolverines really challenge the Jerome Tigers for the first
time in more than 20 years.
The crowd
cheered the team and proudly received the elegant and feisty homecoming
candidates and royalty.
It was a
classic fall football evening.
In
overtime possession after the tie, Jerome took home the win, but Wood
River High School and Hailey garnered the evening’s real trophies:
pride and optimism in what the future holds.
