River Homecoming game
Jerome (1-0)
at Wood River (0-1)

Friday, Sept. 13.
Place—Phil
Homer Field, Hailey.
Significance—Homecoming
2002 for Wood River—and the first game on the new Phil Homer Field.
The tailgate party starts at 5 p.m. in the parking lot.
Last
week—4A
Jerome scored first and last and won 15-11 at 3A Buhl.
Coach
Blackman’s comments—"Jerome
will be bigger than we are. They run a variation of the Wing T and use a
lot of misdirection. We’ll need to make adjustments on defense,
playing our linebackers deeper and letting them flow to the ball. We can’t
give up the big play, and we’ll need to hold them down early. On
offense I expect Jerome will have its hands full with us. We’ve got to
be able to run the counter and sweep to make our double wing offense
work effectively. We’ve got to open up our offense a little against
Jerome."
Last
meeting—Jerome
has won the last two games between the teams 52-0 at Jerome in 1997 and
57-0 in Hailey in 1996. Jerome has pounded Wood River teams 148-0 in the
last three meetings. Not surprisingly, Wood River left Jerome with a
very bitter taste in its mouth after its lopsided shutout loss five
years ago. Leading 45-0, Jerome threw a 61-yard TD pass with three
minutes left in the game. Wood River coaches refused to shake hands with
Jerome coaches after the game. The Wolverine coach at the time was
controversial Dave Zamora. The Hailey squad of 1997 finished a dismal
season 0-8 and set a dubious school record of allowing an average 41.4
points per game.
History—Jerome
is Wood River’s toughest opponent. Jerome leads the series 26-3
including 21 consecutive triumphs (10 shutouts)by a cumulative score of
715 to 104. Wood River has scored only 4 TDs in the last eight games
between the two teams. The only Wood River wins in the series: 19-6 at
Hailey in 1975; 9-6 at Hailey in 1973; and 26-0 at Hailey in 1968.
