Memorial events commemorate day of mourning

By DANA DUGAN
Express Staff Writer

To honor the thousands who died during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, several memorial events are planned for the anniversary in the Wood River Valley:

·  A national moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m. EST, according to The Hospice of the Wood River Valley. The Hospice at Fifth Street and 1st Avenue N. in Ketchum is available to anyone seeking support at this time. There is no charge for bereavement services. For more information, call 726-8464.

·  A commemorative vigil will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, located on Sun Valley Road, beginning at 6:45 a.m. The vigil will last until noon. The names of all the victims will be read aloud.

"Our bell will toll at each milestone—6:45 a.m. and 7:03 a.m.—and at noon a service will end the vigil," St. Thomas’ rector Brian Baker said. The church will be open for anyone at anytime Sept. 11.

·  The Emmanuel Episcopal Church will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for quiet reflection and prayer, said the Rev. Jennifer Antonen. The weekly healing service is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. as usual, and at 5:30 there will be a special "Service of Hope and Healing." Emmanuel is located on the corner of Bullion and Second streets in Hailey.

·  St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Ketchum will host an interfaith service at 7 p.m., which will include the Wood River Jewish Community, St. Thomas, Presbyterian Church of the Bigwood, Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Light on the Mountain, and the Tibetan Buddhist Community.

·  At Numinosity, a healing arts center in Ketchum, there will be nine free classes held throughout the day in mediation, yoga and chanting. Numinosity is located at 140 Sun Valley Road above Anam Cara Art Gallery.

The schedule is as follows: Morning Mediation 7:30-8:45 a.m.; All Level Flow 9-10:15 p.m.; Tantric Flow 10:30-11:45 a.m.; Chi Gong-Intro 1:30-2:45 p.m.; Ashtanga Intro 3-4:15 p.m.; Beginners Yoga 4:30-4:45 p.m.; Intro Flow 6-7:15 p.m. and at 7:30 Satsang Meditation and Chanting continues until 9 p.m. For more information call 726-8552.

·  The Fire Departments of Sun Valley and Ketchum are holding a Remembrance Service at the Forest Service Park in Ketchum at 5 p.m. The name of each fallen firefighter in New York City on Sept. 11 will be read aloud.

Following the service, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Roosevelt Tavern will be open for a reception honoring the emergency personnel of the valley. The restaurant will host firefighters, police and paramedics.

"They can eat or drink on the house," Tom Nickel, owner of the Roosevelt said.

Appetizers will be set out for the community as well. A PA system will be set up for any speeches.

"It’s intended as an opportunity for locals to meet and greet and say thank you to our emergency personnel," Nickel said.

Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne is asking all Idahoans to pause at noon Sept. 11 to remember the victims.

A public ceremony is planned on the Capitol steps in Boise to commemorate the anniversary, called "Idaho Remembers."

The gathering will feature an interfaith contingency, patriotic music, and comments by Kempthorne and by the brother of Idahoan Brady Howell, who was a victim of the attack on the Pentagon. Ada County Sheriff’s Captain Michael Lakey will sing the National Anthem.

At 5 p.m. the governor will meet with legislative leaders, state elected officials and family members of the Idaho victims for a memorial tree planting on the southeast lawn of the Capitol.

The Wood River Valley’s local television station, KSVT-TV, will air "United: The Idaho Red Cross Response to 9-11." This program chronicles the stories of ordinary people who provided extraordinary service on Sept. 11 and in the months following. Of the 15,000 volunteers from around the country 75 were from Idaho.

A Boise-based production company with ties to New York produced the program. The show will air on Channel 14 at 9 a.m. and on Channel 13 at 1, 5, 7 and 10 p.m.
