Carey students are
saluted at awards program
Scholarships, top
citizens are revealed
Carey
School staged its annual Citizenship and Awards program May 22 in the
school gym.
The evening
was a "celebration of success," for students, parents and
teachers, principal John Peck said.
Highlight
of the 70-minute program was the presentation of the Citizenship Awards to
outstanding male and female members of the four upper classes.
Citizenship
Award winners in the senior class were Ismael Mendoza and Karen Patterson.
They received monetary grants from the Progressive and Neighborhood clubs.
Junior
winners were John Saili and Pamela Reay. Honored from the sophomore class
were Ty Simmons and Sarah Lynn Shaffer. Freshman class recipients were
Derrick Patterson and Katie Miller.
Superintendent
Dr. Jim Lewis announced the Works of Grace Foundation scholarships
designed to recognize the lifetime commitment teachers make to improving
society.
This year,
over $100,000 in college scholarships was given to the children of 10
Blaine County School District teachers with a combined 195 years of
teaching experience.
Carey’s
Lee Cook and his family earned the Works of Grace grant.
Special scholarships
The Hailey
Rotary Club scholarships presented by Chris Thompson went to Amy Rivera,
Andrea Ellsworth and Annette Peck.
Tamarah
Adamson, Terra Hansen, Amy Rivera, Karen Patterson and Mindy Patterson
each received $200 Idaho Mountain Express scholarships announced by
Jeff Cordes.
The Blaine
County Education Association scholarship was presented to Annette Peck,
and Andrea Ellsworth accepted the Joni Cordell Leadership Award.
The Wood
River Valley chapter of Dollars for Scholars represented by Audrey Bashaw
gave out three scholarships totaling $2,500.
Dollars for
Scholars winners were Ismael Mendoza and Andrea Ellsworth. In addition,
Amy Rivera received the $1,000 Bud and Ruth Purdy Scholarship from Dollars
for Scholars.
Randy
Patterson announced the winners of $250 scholarships from C & R
Electric.
Recipients
were Tamarah Adamson, Andrea Ellsworth, Terra Hansen, Tiffany Kimball,
Ismael Mendoza, Karen Patterson, Mindy Patterson, Annette Peck, Amy Rivera
and Julie Royal.
Sawtooth
Board of Realtors $1,000 scholarships were given by Rick Davis to Amy
Rivera and Andrea Ellsworth. Receiving the First Bank of Idaho/America’s
Promise scholarship was Julie Royal.
Eva Phippen
Larson Memorial Scholarships amounting to $1,000 each were presented to
Karen Patterson, Mindy Patterson, Annette Peck, Amy Rivera and Julie
Royal.
John
Anderson revealed the winners of the Building Contractors Association of
the Wood River Valley scholarships as Amy Rivera and Andrea Ellsworth.
Institutional
and academic scholarship recipients included Andrea Ellsworth, Tiffany
Kimball, Karen Patterson, Mindy Patterson, Annette Peck and Amy Rivera.
Receiving
U.S. Air Force Recruiting Service math and science achievement awards were
Julie Royal and Karen Patterson.
The INEEL
Hispanic Symposium awards went to Jose Ruiz and Jaqueline Gomez.
Other honors for
Carey
Principal
Peck congratulated six students who achieved perfect attendance. They were
sixth graders Justin Dilworth and Kyle Brooks; fourth graders Lorene
Andrews, Jesse Robinson and Tyler Willis; and first-grade student Austin
Hennefer.
New
officers for the 2002-03 school year were named.
Incoming
Student Body president is Destry Simpson, succeeding Karen Patterson. The
new vice president is Ginger Bingham, replacing John Saili. The new
secretary is Nicki McAfee, following Annette Peck. Incoming treasurer is
Cheyanne Bingham, replacing Ginger Bingham.
Next year’s
yearbook editors are Ginger Bingham and Jesse Molyneux, and the assistant
editors are Kiri Adamson and Julee Hill.
Outgoing
editors Tiffany Kimball and Mindy Patterson announced this year’s
yearbook has been dedicated to three Carey residents who have passed away—Sue
Carpenter, Harry O’Crowley and Garth Cook.
Ronald and
Wanda Peck were honored by the Carey Athletic Association (CAA) as the
"Panther Boosters of the Year." They get free admission to next
year's home games.
Next year’s
CAA president is Nicki McAfee.
Class
awards were also given.
National
School Chorale Award went to Amy Rivera, a first-place district mezzo
soprano who also plays the oboe, piano, guitar and recorder. Annette Peck
won the "Stella" award as the outstanding guitarist.
Introduced
were members of Carey’s "To the Max" singing group: Kiri
Adamson, Tamarah Adamson, Cheyanne Bingham, Ginger Bingham, Shelton
Dickerson, Andrea Ellsworth, Katrina Harmon, Stephen Jurgensmeier, Brooke
McAfee, Ismael Mendoza, Jesse Molyneux, Annette Peck, Melissa Peck, Pamela
Reay, Amy Rivera, K.C. Rivera, Sarah Lynn Shaffer, David Sparks and Haylee
Stocking.
"To
the Max," Most Inspirational was Haylee Stocking and Most Improved
was Kiri Adamson. "Mover and Shaker" was K.C. Rivera. The
Presidential Leadership Award was presented to Amy Rivera.
Best
Instrumentalist was Annette Peck. Best Female and Male Solos went to
Haylee Stocking and Ismael Mendoza. Next year’s "To the Max"
president is Ginger Bingham and vice president is Stephen Jurgensmeier
Tiffany
Kimball won the Cecil B. Smith Art Award as the outstanding art student.
It was presented for the 13th time to a Carey art student.
Drama
awards were given in the traditional categories: Best actor and actress,
David Sparks along with Tiffany Kimball and Amy Rivera; best supporting
actor and actress, Ty Simmons and Annette Peck; rookie award, Joe
Patterson and Karen Patterson; and stage technician, Derrick Patterson.
Next year’s
Drama Club president is Joe Patterson.
Singled out
for Carey Rodeo Club awards were Julee Hill, Vance Dill, Cody Hennefer,
Randy Lundergreen, Jesse Molyneux and Melissa Peck. Next year’s Rodeo
Club president is Julee Hill.
The
scholastic team placed fifth of 19 teams in regional competition. Members
were Tiffany Kimball, Karen Patterson, Jesse Molyneux, Mindy Patterson,
Blake Surerus, Joe Patterson, Devon Campbell, MaKay Nielson and Shelton
Dickerson.
Making the
all-region scholastic team was Tiffany Kimball, who received a certificate
and a medal.
