Credit
cards and hockey sticks were equally dangerous weapons in the hands of the
"Funsets" women’s hockey team in Boise last weekend.
Skaters
from the Fury and Sunsets hockey clubs combined to form the "Funsets."
The Sun
Valley sextet took on the Boise-based Blast and Bombshells on the Idaho
Steelheads home ice at the Bank of America Centre.
That is, of
course, when they weren’t clearing merchandise off of store shelves.
Sun Valley
gave up a late goal to the Boise Blast Saturday, narrowly losing 3-2.
Circling in
the slot, Georgia Hutchinson scored on a pass from Jini Griffith two
minutes into the contest. Boise equalized on the following face-off.
Blueliner
Liza Weekes kicked the puck to Jenni Conrad who scored for a 2-1 lead, but
Boise scored twice more in the second period and held on to the lead for a
3-2 victory.
Bolstered
by a poor night of sleep and plenty of caffeine, the Funsets skated with
the frenzied passion of a person at a 50 percent off sale. They busted the
Bombshells 4-zip.
Once again,
Hutchinson, skating with cowboy Cody Ohl’s name on the back of her
helmet, struck first, scoring the opening goal of the game unassisted.
Jini
Griffith stuffed a rebound off a crackling shot off the glass by
defenseman Sarah Benson for a 2-0 advantage.
On the team’s
third goal, Nicole Perkins carried the puck into the zone, drew the goalie
to her, and slipped a sweet pass to Conrad who went high for a 3-0 lead.
Weekes
slapped home the final goal for a 4-0 victory.
Also
skating for the Funsets were Jennifer Copeland, Jody Zarkos, Nancy
Parsons-Brown, Merri Whitehead and goalie Karen Morrison. The team was
coached by Vilnis Nikolaisons, Ivars Muzis and Chris Benson.
