‘Dancing Out Loud’

Idaho Dance Theatre brings contemporary dance to Sun Valley

By ADAM TANOUS
Express Arts Editor

Students and fans of dance may enjoy an unusual treat when the Idaho Dance Theatre comes to town this weekend. The IDT brings its fall production, "Dancing Out Loud," to The Community School Theater in Sun Valley at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The performances are being presented by Footlight Dance Center and The Community School Theatre.

"Dancing Out Loud" weaves together elements of dance, theater and surrealism. Choreographer Carl Rowe will premiere his newest work, "Variations on a Life." Dancer Echo Waldron is the lead dancer in this piece set to music by Rachmaninoff.

Also on the program is a nine-section piece of Rowe’s, titled "Suite Quartets," performed to string quartet music. It is an eclectic work incorporating ensemble dance, a bluesy solo and a backpack duet.

For those more of the post modern bent there will be a new work by Thax von Reither, titled "Fraternus." All of the men in the company and one woman dance in this piece about the physical, spiritual and emotional power of men. "Fraternus" will be performed to music by The Dave Matthews Band.

Lastly, conjure the image of a mechanic shop operated by seven beautiful women and you’ll have the gist of Marla Hansen’s newest ballet performed to jazz. In conjunction with the production, Hansen will be in Ketchum to offer a master ballet class 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Sun Valley Athletic Club.

In all, it should be an eclectic production, drawing on the diverse professional talents of the Idaho Dance Theatre.

Tickets may be purchased at Chapter One Bookstore in Ketchum.

Any dancers wishing to sign up for Hansen’s class should call 726-3664 ext. 16.
