Mountain bikers
descend on Mackay course
White Knob
Challenge racing
Alex
Gardner of the Boise Stars outdistanced the field to win the 17th annual
Mackay White Knob Challenge mountain bike race Aug. 4.
Gardner
took first place in the Pro Men's division by completing the 19-mile
course in 1.14:37. Placing second was Ketchum rider Whitney Albright of
Durance Cycleworks at 1.17:14.
Craig
Sandstrom of Wang was third at 1.17:25 while Craig Kidd of Instant Replay
finished fourth at 1.17:35.
Lorien
Lightfield of Goldy's in Boise took first-place honors in Pro/Expert women
at 1:35.03. Jen Agger of Jackson, Wyo., placed second at 1:35.35.
White Knob
Challenge, the longest running mountain bike race in Idaho, saw 175 racers
compete in various divisions.
Cyclists
from six western states competed in the classic event sponsored by Lost
River Cycling of Boise. It is unique because all bikers in all classes
ride the same distance.
The race
included a nine-mile climb that gained 2,300 feet in elevation, followed
by a descent through challenging boulder-strewn terrain.
Marvin
Melville, 66, of Ketchum, won the Grand Masters division in 2.04:35.
Todd Adams
captured the "drag" race on a single speed.
The race
would not be possible without the help of numerous bike shops through out
the valley including; Durance, Sun Summit, Sturtos and Backwoods.
Boise-area
sponsors included: Bobs Bicycles, Mackenzie River Pizza, Titus Cycles,
Alliant Foods, Unisouce, Nagel Beverage, Lyle Pearson Motors, Murphy,
