Elaine McClain graduates from Smith
American Studies major
If you remember the Southern Gentleman Restaurant in
Bellevue, you probably remember the owners, Elaine and Jerry McClain.
Elaine McClain ran a restaurant and ran for office while a Wood River
Valley resident.
Shes doing something different these days.
On May 14, Elaine McClain was one of 667 seniors who graduated from Smith
College in Northampton, Mass. during the 122nd commencement exercises at the prestigious
four-year liberal arts college.
A student in Smiths Ada Comstock Scholars Program for students
beyond the traditional age, McClain majored in American Studies at Smith.
Her undergraduate activities included senator in the Student Government
Association and liaison between the Senate and Ada Comstock cabinet.
McClain plans to teach in the Southwest and, next May, attend the college
graduation of daughter Jolene McClain.
Elaine McClain ran for political office during her stay in Blaine County
10 years ago.
Campaigning as a Democrat in 1990, she won the May primary run-off, then
lost 11,117 to 8,471 to incumbent Republican Ralph Peters of Jerome in the November
election for District 25 House Seat B.
