NEWS UPDATES:

Sunny Day, Fast Snow For Winterstart

Race organizer Rick Kapala of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Junior Nordic ski team said that he and his dedicated crew were fortunate to catch a beautiful, sunny day and fast snow conditions for Sunday’s 41st Winterstart Nordic races at Galena Lodge north of Ketchum. There were 83 racers doing their laps at the 7.5-kilometer, 5k and 2.5k distances as the valley’s cross-country ski racing season got off to a solid start. Kapala said, “It was a pretty darn good turnout, considering the ‘low-ish’ snow conditions to start the season.” Setting the pace here are 17-year-old SVSEF Comp Team racers Haley Montgomery, left, and Katie Feldman, right, who won the women’s 5k race in 10 minutes and 16 seconds.
