Taking the mystery out of avalanche advisories

Former center director explains danger levels, conditions

The center uses a danger scale (shown above) to color code its advisories, alerting skiers, snowboarders and other backcountry enthusiasts to the risks they run on certain slopes under specific conditions. According to the center, more people are killed during the “considerable” level of danger than any other rating.
