All In For The New Year
Led by veteran Polar Bear Club jumper John Corrigan (in the water) the Wood River lured five hearty souls to take the plunge on New Year’s Day 2009. This year marks the 12th consecutive anniversary of local chapter members toasting the new year for health, happiness and abundance of fun and then jumping in the stream. Air and water temperatures were cold enough to turn skin color from pasty white to crimson red in a matter of seconds, but smiles abounded, nobody was hurt and, according to Corrigan, “It was a good jump.” Founded at Coney Island, N.Y., in 1903, Polar Bear Clubs celebrate this tradition worldwide.
