NEWS UPDATES:

Winner Takes The Spoils

Sun Valley closed its 72nd ski season on Bald Mountain Sunday at 3:45 p.m. At 4:15 p.m., an unofficial ski race occurred down the out-of-bounds Scorpion ski run adjacent to Warm Springs Lodge. Eight competitors started from the top of the run after a snowball was thrown to signify the start of the race. Racers who had sawed off the tails of their skis just behind the bindings (à la the old short-tail Scorpion skis, commercially produced in the late 1970s) criss-crossed down the partially snow covered run to the bottom, crossed the Warm Springs bridge by the lodge, skied on to the pavers, removed their skis, ran to Apple’s restaurant in their ski boots and each drank a 16-ounce beer. When the first beer can hit the ground empty, the winner was determined. Racers who made it to the podium were, from left to right, Brett Jacobson, second place; Wes Powell, winner; and Chase Gouley, third place. Photo by Willy Cook
