Snow Gurus Coach Skiers on Safety Basics

Students participating Saturday in a Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center avalanche basics field class puzzle over the significance of various snow layers as they pertain to overall snowpack stability. During the course of the day, avalanche instructors, including Matt Lutz, right, guided groups through the steps of evaluating snow stability. The course also focused on group travel protocol in avalanche terrain and practiced procedures for search and rescue after a mock avalanche. Express photos by Matt Furber
