A day of play pays off for area kids

Bigwood Women?s Golf Tournament

The Bigwood Women?s Golf As-sociation staged its 2004 tournament at Bigwood Golf Course at Thunder Spring Tuesday.

The best-ball format attracted 35 teams of two.

Marsha Rankin and Arlene Herich were the overall champions with a 74. Other gross champs were Linda Thor-son and Page Klune, Barb Aslett and Kay Bengoechea, Janice Larson and Bobbie Hapayan

Net winners were Gail Nolan and Bobbie Dahl, Nanette Woodland and Kay Johns, Patty Lee and Lola Gla-vin, Jef Donovan and Donna Kostens.

Jef Donavan had the longest drive of the day. Mary Hite was closest-to-the-pin.

According to Torene Bonner, the event raised $1,500 and will be used to promote youth golf in the valley.

?We want to help the female youth of the valley in their golf careers,? Bonner said. ?We sponsor a pass at Bigwood for a female golfer. This year the recipient was Britt VanPaep-ghem. Next year we can do a golf pass, and expand that to the summer golf program at Atkinson Park for kids who cannot pay.?
