Fishing Report

by Bill Mason

Depending on where you are going and what and how you are using your fly selection, fishing is very good, with not a lot of changes from last week. How long it will remain this way is anybodies guess but I think this upcoming week could be wonderful. Let?s have a look.

Silver Creek Fishing is difficult but very good with not much changes from the past week. Primary morning hatches are Trico, Beatis spinners and a few PMD spinners mixed in. Flies that work and should be carried are a Dave Trico and Hi-Viz Trico Spinners #22, a Mason Quill Beatis Spinner #22 and a PMD Cutwing #18 to cover all the hatches or more specifically, what bugs the fish are feeding on at the time. Prior to the Trico spinners falling to the surface, a Trico Dun and Trico Nymph #22 can be used with some degree of success. There is some terrestrial and Callibeatis activity in the afternoon but it?s nothing to write home about.

Big Wood Success comes and goes but for the most part, fishing has been very good. It all depends on the place your fishing, for some places are far better than others. Without naming every rock in the river, keep moving until your find some working fish. Little Beatis Duns and some Micro Caddis are being found and a Parachute Adams #18-20 seem to be doing the job. Size is the key, period. Trico is being seen in the lower stretches around Broadford road but as yet, are not on the water in enough quantity to constitute a fishable situation This will change and a small Para Adams and a HI-Viz Trico Spinner will work. Basic nymphs such as Bead Head Prince, Copper Johns and Flashback Peasant Tails , all in size #16 will work underneath.

Big Lost Has also been fishing quite well but mostly on the surface, which is most unusual. Yellow Para Adams # 16 and Yellow Simulators #14-14 are moving fish. Trico is being seen in the air but as yet, has not fallen to the water. Like the Big Wood, this will change. Para Adams and Hi-Viz Trico Spinners #18-20 will work if the fish get on them. Cranefly?s are also being seen in abundance and our big Cranefly pattern #8 can work well. Copper Johns and San Juan Worms seem to be the best underneath.

Warm Springs/Trail Creek Both fishing up to par using basic pattern such as Para Adams, Small Royal Wulffs, Humpy?s and Elk Hair Caddis #14-16. Prince Nymphs #14 will also catch fish

Penny Lake/ Lake Creek Still a good place for kids fishing for planted fish.
