Stouffer named top soccer girls’ coach in Great Basin

Jesse Cole shares “Player of the Year” honor

     Wood River High School mathematics teacher and girls’ soccer coach Doug Stouffer was named “Coach of the Year” for the girls when the 4A Great Basin Conference 2013 All-Conference soccer teams were announced this week.

     Stouffer, in his 15th season coaching with the Wood River girls’ program, returned as head coach this season and led the No. 3-seeded Wolverines (14-6-0) to their first GBC tournament title since 2010. Wood River beat three-time defending champion Twin Falls 1-0.

     After spending four years as varsity coach from 2000-03 including winning Wood River’s last state soccer championship in 2000, Stouffer was junior varsity coach for 10 campaigns. His combined records now in 222 games are 68-25-8 as a varsity coach and 90-30-4 with the junior varsity.

     Wood River’s top scorer the past two years, sophomore Jesse Cole, was named Great Basin “Co-Player of the Year” along with Twin Falls senior Mehli Marcellus. Cole scored 21 goals, and has 52 in two seasons with the Wolverines.

     Canyon Ridge boys’ coach Cory Farnsworth was GBC boys’ “Coach of Year: and Jerome senior Edgar Juarez was “Player of the Year.”

     Five Wood River boys and eight Wolverine girls were also singled out for All-League. First-team honors went to Jon Scott, goalkeeper Kyle Weller, Rory Cole, Samantha Sutton and Brigette Thomas.

     Here are the GBC selections:

     GBC boys’ first team: Jon Scott and goalkeeper Kyle Weller (WR seniors); Yovani Martinez and Freddy Gonzales (Jerome seniors); Cristian Muniz and Hadir Saad (Canyon Ridge seniors); Daniel Johnson and Eric Tapia (Minico seniors); Omar Magana (Burley senior); Morgan Olson and Sean Perkins (Twin Falls senior, junior).

     GBC girls’ first team: Rory Cole, Samantha Sutton and Brigette Thomas (WR seniors); Bethany Whitehead (Burley senior); Lyric Nance (Jerome junior); Courtney Stenger and Kennedy Stenger (Canyon Ridge seniors); Hannah Greenawald, Lindsey Williams and Tanner Thompson (Twin Falls, senior, junior and junior); goalkeeper Alexis DeWalt (Canyon Ridge sophomore).

     GBC boys’ second team: Sage Kelly (WR senior); Jose Granados and Jose Vidaca (Jerome seniors); Rodrigo Perez and Nicholas Hunt (Twin Falls juniors); Ayoub Zahroun and goalkeeper Hari Biswa (Canyon Ridge seniors); Giovanni Saldana and Juan Aguilar (Minico senior, junior); Mitch Rice and Cole Wright (Burley seniors).

     GBC girls’ second team: Timber Kelly and Olivia Thornton (WR seniors); Sabrina Tarchione and Kylie Greenawald (Twin Falls seniors); Tally McCombs (Burley senior); Kimiko Shigihara and Clarissa Henderson (Canyon Ridge senior, sophomore); Hayley Van Tassell and Eloisa Gonzalez (Minico senior, junior); Alondra Becerra (Jerome senior); goalkeeper Jackie Hamblin (Burley senior).

     GBC boys’ honorable mention: Carlos Gonzalez and Ben Brunelle (WR juniors); Keion Peterson, Jordan Shigihara and Jose Pastor (Canyon Ridge seniors); David Tovar and Giovanni Villegas (Minico juniors); Aaron Arevalo and Enrique Sandoval (Jerome senior, junior); Oscar Paniagua, Bryce Dixon and Victor Hugo (Twin Falls seniors); Jaime Moharra (Burley senior).

     GBC girls’ honorable mention: Lucy Brannon, goalkeeper Molly Whittington and Emerson McCune (WR senior, sophomore, freshman); Peyton Karl and Kylie Hicks (Twin Falls seniors); Ana Tellez (Minico senior); Ruth Lozano, Jenny Magalon and Gaby Cervantes (Jerome senior, senior, junior); Ariana Human-McKinnon, Caitlin Crist and Jade Higley (Canyon Ridge sophomore, freshman, freshman); Mireya Villanueva, Kaitlyn Holt and Savanna Searie (Burley senior, sophomore, freshman).
