Courthouse renovation nearing the end

Project could be complete by late December

By JENNIFER LIEBRUM

Last-minute changes to the working checklist for completion of the roof rebuild at the Old Blaine County Courthouse in Hailey were allowed by county commissioners Tuesday, but not without a scolding from Commissioner Larry Schoen.
Schoen said he was “frustrated by the constant stream of change orders” coming through in the 11th hour of the nearly $2 million project. Commissioner Jacob Greenberg cited similar concerns but said after reviewing the proposals he determined that to not make the changes could prove detrimental in the long run.
Operations Manager Char Nelson said other changes have offset the cost for more heat panels than were originally ordered to be added in, which meant the difference of a few hundred dollars. For example, some exterior work that can wait until spring weather was put off to avoid the extra effort involved to perform the work in winter weather.
Greenberg said he understood the discrepancy regarding the heat panels was a common one that occurs when a distributor makes an estimate and the actual installers get on the job to adjust the product to the project.
Still, the last week of December, sometime between the 19th and the 29th, were being considered as possible dates for repopulating the 130-year-old building.
Other areas that required adjustments included some plywood needed to replace roof sheathing and deficiencies in the electric panels that would need to be made legal to meet code.
