Uncontrolled dogs are a menace to Hailey

As was reported by the Mountain Express a year ago, I had to fight off a dog trying to come through my yard fence in Deerfield to attack our cats. That incident was added to a long list that resulted in a well-written article about what is a valley-wide problem.
Yesterday, the folks renting our same Deerfield home had a pair of dogs attack and nearly kill their cat—on our front steps. The folks had to come out and beat the dogs away. The cat is in very tough condition and may well die. Fortunately, the two young boys who reside with their parents were not there, or they would have been in the middle of it. I cannot imagine how parents explain to a 4- and 6-year-old why their cat is nearly dead.
Today, the same dogs came back, hunting for the cat. If you live in Hailey (or the valley in general), you learn that barking dogs, dogs at large and a minority of irresponsible owners are just part of the landscape. Hailey law on barking and at-large dogs is a joke and is largely ignored. I actually had a renter (not a homeowner) with dogs on the same street that regularly bark suggest in response to a phone call that we should move “to a gated community where people don’t like dogs.” It was usually the first thing we heard in the morning, it ruined the peace of the neighborhood, and eventually was a factor in us moving. That people accept it enables the behavior to continue.
I hope the dog owner is hauled into court and fined and, since the dogs are a clear threat to public safety, that they are put down. That will not save the injured cat, pay a veterinarian bill that will run into the thousands, or soothe the tears of kids who had their pet ripped apart—but it does send a message that at least some homeowners will not put up with this insanity anymore.
