WRHS girls take another regional swim title

State challenge is next in Boise

Wood River High School’s girls’ swim team continued to dominate during the Southeast Idaho regional high school championship meet Saturday, Nov. 1 in Pocatello.

The Wolverine girls captured their 11th consecutive regional team championship Saturday and set their sights on defending their state high school championship this coming weekend in Boise.

An elated Wood River coach Brian Gallagher said about his team’s determination and focus in Pocatello, “They really came to play today!”

Placing first individually for Wood River were junior Maddie Johnson (100/200 free and 100 fly), senior Kaedi Fry (200 I.M.), sophomore Kat Lemma (50 free), sophomore Chiloe Spelius (500 free) and junior Olivia Wentzell (100 breast).

Wood River crushed the field with wins in two relays—the 400 free (Johnson, Spelius, Danielle Doerflein and Lemma) and 200 medley (Fry, Wentzell, Johnson and Lemma).

At the Idaho State University Reed Gym pool, 252 competitors from 16 district teams were hosted by the three Gate City high schools—Pocatello, Century and Highland.

Other top individual resuts for the Wolverine girls Saturday: Kaedi Fry 2nd 100 breast; Kat Lemma 2nd 100 free; Chiloe Spelius 3rd 100 fly; and Olivia Wentzell 5th 100 free.

Also, sophomore Danielle Doerflein 10th 100 breast and 14th 200 free; freshman Allie Trotter-Wright 13th 500 free and 42nd 50 free; freshman M Clayton 22nd 200 free and 38th 100 free; and, in her final Wood River meet, senior Mia Smith 23rd100 breast and 35th 50 free.

Wood River placed a close second in 200 free relay (Fry, Spelius, Doerflein, Lemma).

Keeping the boys’ effort alive were freshman Mason Johnson and teammate Nyle Prabowo. Johnson took 2nd in a photo-finish 500 free competition and 4th in 200 free. Prabowo finished 13th in 100 breast and 40th in 100 free.

Looking ahead, coach Gallagher will accompany a tough and well-prepared Wood River squad to the Idaho High School Championships in Boise Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8.

Those Wood River girls who have qualified for an expected showdown with Boise and Coeur d’Alene to defend their state girls’ swimming title are Fry, Johnson, Wentzell, Spelius, Lemma and Doerflein.

Mason Johnson has qualified for the state boys’ meet and will race 200 and 500 free.
