Carey coasts past Mackay 42-0, makes Round of 8

Panthers visit Rockland Friday for quarterfinal contest

There will be new champion in the Idaho 1A Division 2 eight-man football ranks this month—and the Carey School Panthers think they have as good a shot as anyone.

Carey (8-1) advanced into the Round of 8 quarter-final round with a 42-0 home win over the Mackay Miners (3-6) Thursday in a Sawtooth Conference West/East state play-in game at Carey’s Derrick Parke Memorial Field.

Panther sophomores Toby Whitworth (171 all-purpose yards) and Parker Gamino (88 rushing yards) each scored two touchdowns as Carey out-gained Mackay 425-194 in yardage. Carey had 303 rushing yards led by Whitworth (89).

Senior quarterback Nate Adamson and senior Corban Johnson scored the other two TDs as Carey bounced back after its only loss—a 28-22 home setback to Lighthouse Christian Academy Oct. 24 that settled the Sawtooth West regular-season eight-man title.

Carey’s shutout win over Mackay and the results of three other Sawtooth play-in games completed the field for the eight-school 1A Division 2 tournament starting Nov. 7-8.

Next assignment for coach Lane Kirkland’s Panthers is a trip to Rockland Friday, Nov. 7 for a 1 p.m. quarterfinal game. The host Bulldogs (8-1) are currently on a roll, having won six straight games since a 68-24 trouncing at Carey Sept. 12.

Other quarterfinals: Lighthouse Christian (9-0) hosting North Gem of Bancroft (4-4) on Friday; Wilder (7-1, 67.5 ppg offense) visiting Deary (7-2) in Moscow’s Kibbie Dome Friday night; and Council (8-1) hosting Kendrick (6-3) Saturday.

If Carey beats Rockland, the Panthers play the winner of Deary-Wilder in the semi-finals over the Nov. 14-15 weekend. Kirkland said, “If Wilder wins, we go to Wilder. If Deary wins, it looks like we’d play Deary at Holt Arena (in Pocatello).”

Rockland stands in the way of those scenarios, but Carey has some productive history with the Bulldogs—winning 16 consecutive games over Rockland since a 38-0 loss at Rockland in 1996. They’ve won the last three times playing in Rockland, 30-20 in 2013, 52-14 in 2012 and 40-12 in 2009.

Kirkland said, “It’s never easy to play and beat a team twice in a season. Rockland hasn’t hosted a first-round playoff game in a long time, and they’re got some excited seniors on their team who have excelled this season.

“We’ve got to get off the bus well and get hot early in the game. Rockland will have a loud, pumped-up crowd. We’ve played well on the road. We’ve been tested by the pass at Dietrich (a 54-8 Carey win) and by the run at Castleford (52-6 Carey win). Now we’re ready.”

Carey’s defense has yielded only 9.3 points per game and has limited seven of its nine opponents to one touchdown or less. That’s a big reason the Panthers are 4-0 on the road.

Kirkland said, “Our pass defense is the best it has been—forever.

“Coaches (Lane) Durtschi and (Jake) Nilsen have put together interesting stunts and blitz packages. We have mixed things up very well. Our defense has been very aggressive. We’re more mobile in our interior with our nose-guard and attacking linebackers.”

The Panther defense will have to stop Rockland quarterback Rex Permann, who racked up 225 all-purpose yards in the 68-24 loss at Carey Sept. 12. In that game Carey had 407 rushing yards led by Adamson’s 248 on the ground.

It’s unlikely that Rockland will make as many mistakes as its three lost fumbles in that game. Carey also blocked a punt for a touchdown and made six quarterback sacks. The Panthers led 44-8 at half.

Carey, Lighthouse Christian Academy of Twin Falls, Deary and last year’s state runner-up Council are the only four schools returning from last year’s playoffs won for the second straight year by Salmon River of Riggins. And those four schools could make it to the 2014 semi-finals, although Wilder could topple northern Idaho champion Deary.

Adamson makes run at a record

Carey quarterback and linebacker Nate Adamson is quietly making a run at the single-season Panther scoring record.

Adamson (26 touchdowns, 8 conversions, 13 TD passes, 15 conversion passes) has amassed 172 of Carey’s 458 points this season. He could break Jonathan Rivera’s single-season record of 182 points Friday at Rockland.

Rivera, a 1997-2000 Carey stalwart, tallied 29 TDs and 4 conversions for 182 points in his senior season. The two-time All-State player tallied 73 TDs and 17 conversions for an unreachable 472 career points. Adamson over four seasons has 53 TDs and 18 conversions for 354 points, plus 30 TD passes and 22 two-point tosses.

Adamson didn’t play a full game in Thursday’s 42-0 win over Mackay. His 47-yard scoring run seven minutes into the game put Carey on top 16-0 en route to a 36-0 halftime lead.

“We put up some points early in the game which allowed us to get some reps with the second string. They played the entire second half on offense. I felt like we played good football and managed the game well,” said Kirkland.

Junior Joe Parke (13 tackles) led the Panther defense and senior Chris Peck recorded two of the five Panther quarterback sacks. Toby Whitworth and Parke had interceptions, and Collin Whitby recovered a fumble.

Mackay had nine seniors on its shorthanded 11-player roster, and the Miners lost a good one when Naylan Whitworth stayed down after being tackled on a 16-yard pass catch near the Carey sideline early in the second quarter. He suffered a “bad quad pull,” Kirkland said, and had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Kirkland said that longtime Mackay coach Jack McKelvey was “pretty emotional” after the game—absorbing the end of the Miner season and the prospect of Mackay playing only a junior varsity schedule next season because of its shortage of available players.

From 1985-2006 McKelvey coached Mackay for 22 seasons, a 165-48 record and eight state championships. He won six straight Idaho 1A 11-man crowns from 1996-2001.

McKelvey was replaced as head football coach for several years by his former defensive coordinator Lance Rosenkrance, before McKelvey picked up the reins again for the last several Miner grid seasons in addition to his duties as the school’s athletic director.
