Hailey girls rally for 3-2 state win over Kuna

WRHS highlight of northern Idaho trip

Wood River High School’s attempt for its first State 4A girls’ soccer tournament trophy in six years came up short in a 3-0 loss to Century of Pocatello Saturday during the eight-school tourney at Lake City and Coeur d’Alene.

The Wolverines (14-6-0) went 1-2 in the Idaho High School Activities Association tournament starting with a 2-1 loss to Preston Thursday and staying alive with a 3-2 win over Kuna in a Friday loser-out game.

It was Hailey’s 20th straight trip to the state girls’ soccer tourney, and it continued Wood River’s streak of winning at least one game in all those state tourney trips.

Highlight for the Great Basin Conference tournament champion Wolverines on a wet weekend in northern Idaho was Friday’s victory over Kuna (10-12-1).

Wood River fell behind 2-0 in the first eight minutes but rallied for a 3-2 win on the second of two goals by freshman Emily Thayer in the 69th minute. Senior Samantha Sutton tallied the other goal on a long-distance shot knotting the contest 2-2 at halftime.

Senior Brigette Thomas assisted on both Thayer goals.

Coach Doug Stouffer said about the Kuna comeback, “Wood River again displayed a never-give-up attitude despite allowing two goals early in the game. Great teams are not afraid to come from behind and the girls showed some greatness during this match-up.”

Preston (14-7-0) scored in the 27th and 70th minutes for its 2-0 lead Thursday, before Sutton’s 25-yard free kick made for the 2-1 final.

Meanwhile, previously unbeaten Century fell 2-1 to Middleton in the first round, before the Diamondbacks stayed alive by ousting Great Basin Conference runner-up Twin Falls (14-6-0) Friday.

That result created the Wood River-Century match-up for the state consolation trophy—and Century (13-7-2 overall in the 12-season rivalry) has always been a thorn in Wood River’s side.

Century completed its stroll through the consolation bracket defeating Wood River 3-0 Saturday at Lake City—the third straight state tournament shutout for Century over a Wolverine squad since 2011.

The Diamondbacks scored in the 12th, 35th and 41st minutes, the final goals on headers. Goal scorers for coach Jamshid Roomiany were senior Sarah Holt, junior Miranda Navarro and sophomore Katie Hiller.

Stouffer said about his team, “I think the girls showed incredible grit playing in the third game in three days in less-than-ideal conditions.

“We certainly got beat by a very good Century team but the girls hung in there until the very end. I told them at the end of the game that one game should not define their season.

“We have accomplished so much coming together as a team, achieving goals, rising to the challenges and winning the district championship. No one can take those things away from us.

“Despite losing our last game, we still ended the season on a high note. The season was filled with special moments and special athletes. I am proud to be a small part of this team.”

Of the eight teams competing at Coeur d’Alene, only Sandpoint, Century and Bishop Kelly of Boise had won 4A titles since the IHSAA started sanctioning state tourneys in high school girls’ soccer in 2000.

That situation didn’t change Saturday because Sandpoint (9-8-2) beat Bishop Kelly (15-4-0) by a 1-0 score in the title game for a second straight year. Middleton (14-7-0) earned third place 4-1 over Preston.

Wood River senior Olivia Thornton was chosen to play in the All-Star Senior Soccer game Tuesday, Oct. 28 in Wendell.

The Wolverine boys selected for Tuesday’s All-Star game were Jon Scott, Sage Kelly and goalkeeper Kyle Weller.

       · Final girls’ team statistics: Wood River 14-6-0 (7-1-0 home, 7-5-0 away, 7-3-0 league for #2 seed, 1st place in Great Basin Conference tournament with 9 shutouts in 20 games.
