Cutthroat runners on top at 2A/1A footrace

At Gooding Golf Course footrace


     Community School freshman Henry Raff won the boys’ 3.1-mile race, while the Cutthroat girls from Sun Valley also grabbed the 2A/1A district team championship Wednesday in Gooding.

     Raff (17:38) earned his second individual victory of the 2014 footrace season and posted a season best by 13 seconds in taking an 18-second win over Hagerman junior Daniel Daily (17:56) in the field of 57 small-school racers.

     Individually, Raff and Cutthroat junior Max Polito (18:19, 5thplace) qualified for the State 2A cross country run sponsored by the Idaho High School Activities Association on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Eagle Island State Park near Boise.

     Coach Rick Kapala’s Cutthroat boys (80) placed fourth of seven teams, but came within five points of second place. Valley of Hazelton (30) took the 2A/1A team win.

     The Cutthroat girls placed four runners in the top 13 of the 40-runner girls’ 2A/1A event and won the team title with 33 points, compared to 37 for second-place Wendell and 50 for third-place Declo.

     Posting season-best times were senior Tara Burchmore (6th place, 22:25), junior Ava Mazzoni (11th, 22:46), senior Alyssa Diamond (12th place, 23:00) and junior Annika Landis (13th place, 23:05).

     Results from Wednesday’s Gooding Golf Course meet:

       2A/1A girls, 5k: 1—Abby Critchfield (Oakley) 20:16. 6—Tara Burchmore (CS) 22:25. 11—Ava Mazzoni (CS) 22:46. 12—Alyssa Diamond (CS) 23:00. 13—Annika Landis (CS) 23:05. 26—Sophia DeKlotz (CS) 27:15. 31—Hannah Cobb (CS) 28:49. 36—Lena DeKlotz (CS) 31:07 (40 runners).

       Team: 1—Community School 33. 2—Wendell 37. 3—Declo 50.

     2A/1A boys, 5k: 1—Henry Raff (CS) 17:38. 5—Max Polito (CS) 18:19. 24—Peter Wolter (CS) 20:27. 29—Gil Viesturs (CS) 21:09. 32—Max Tanous (CS) 21:19 (57 runners).
