Local basketball fans can glimpse the new edition of the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles men’s basketball team today, Wednesday in Hai-ley.
The 2014-15 CSI men’s bas-ketball team will participate in an inter-squad scrimmage at Hailey’s Wood River High School gym Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. It is one of only two pre-season scrimmages for the CSI Golden Eagle men.
Donations will be accepted and will benefit the Wood River High School boys’ basketball team as well as the Wood River High Student Union.
A pre-game meal, hosted by the Wood River boys’ basket-ball Team, will be offered be-ginning at 5:30 p.m.
The meal consisting of spa-ghetti, salad and bread will cost $10 per person. It will be a fundraising activity for Wood River boys’ basketball and the Wood River Student Union.
The CSI men’s team will be in attendance to meet with the public and sign autographs for kids during dinner and after the game.
The CSI men’s basketball team is one of the highest qual-ity National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) teams in the U.S. Last year, the team posted a 27-5 record and in 2011 won the NJCAA Na-tional Basketball Champion-ship.
First-year CSI coach is Jared Phay, a Post Falls native com-ing off a 10-year stint winning 221 games for the North Idaho College program in Coeur d’Alene. He was Region 18 “Coach of the Year” three times.
Phay has 16 freshmen on his 17-player 2014-15 roster includ-ing 6-0 guard Alec Meyerhoef-fer of Twin Falls, signed in July after helping the Twin Falls Bruins to a State 4A hoops title. The Golden Eagles start their season Oct. 31 in Twin Falls.
The freshman class includes twin brothers Dakota Cham-bers and Colton Chambers, sons of four-time NBA All-Star Tom Chambers, 55, of Ogden, Utah.
Dakota Chambers is a 6-10, 225-pound forward and Colton Chambers is a 6-9, 225-pound forward, both from Palisades Charter School in Paradise Val-ley, Az. They are related to Forrest and Cheryl Hymas of East Fork.
Tom Chambers, a 6-10, 230-pound power forward, came out of Fairview High School in Boulder, Co. and played for the University of Utah from 1977-81 before playing pro basketball from 1981-97 for San Diego, Se-attle, Phoenix and the Utah Jazz. He was a career 20,049-point scorer (18.1 ppg).
His move from the Seattle Supersonics to Phoenix Suns after Chambers won the 1987 All-Star MVP award helped pioneer unrestricted free agency in the NBA.
For more details call Wood River head boys’ basketball coach Andy Miles at 720-1314, Wood River High Student Un-ion Advisor Chris Koch at 720-6608 or CSI athletic director Joel Bate at 208-732-6836.
The Wood River boys start practices for their 2014-15 sea-son on Friday, Nov. 14. They will host a pre-season jamboree Friday, Nov. 21 at the Hailey gym with the Mountain Home and Timberline of Boise squads.
This season’s WRHS sched-ule opening at home with Filer Dec. 1 includes a trip to the Skyview Invitational in Nampa Dec. 18-20.
