Erman wins Master class in Montana hill climb

Cyclist competes in Missoula

Ketchum cyclist Laird Erman won the Grand Master Men (ages 55-64) class of the 38th annual Western Montana Hill Climb Championships Saturday, Oct. 4 on a four-mile, 840-vertical-foot course up Pattee Canyon in Missoula.

His time was 19 minutes and 17 seconds in Montana’s oldest annual competitive cycling event, held each year since 1977. There were 36 participants in ideal fall weather, the top men’s time of 13:28 clocked by Arizonan Lewis Eliot.

Erman said about the interval-start event, “I had never done the race previously, in fact, I hadn’t even pre-run the course, nor had I ever even ridden or seen the course prior to the race. Needless to say I will return in coming years to defend my title!”
