Gooding arrives today to challenge Cutthroats

Home finale at Sagewillow Farm

Community School soccer teams launched back into action Monday with two home victories as the 2014 season hit its homestretch leading up to the High Desert Soccer Conference league tournaments.

The Cutthroat boys tuned up for their clash with two-time defending State 3A champion Gooding by romping past the Declo Hornets 10-0 at Browning Field in Elkhorn. And the Cutthroat girls cruised 8-0 over the Hornets.

Today’s girls’ and boys’ games with Gooding will be the final regular-season action, although conference tournament games will be played here. Much of the focus will be on the boys’ match today.

Gooding (7-3-2, 7-2-1 league for 22 points) has played two more league games than the Cutthroat boys (9-3-0, 7-1-0 for 21 points) and nevertheless takes a one-point lead into today’s 5:45 p.m. rematch in Sun Valley. The Cutthroats won 2-1 at Gooding back on Sept. 8.

The Senators won 3-2 at Buhl (4-7-2, 3-6-1, 10 points) on Monday. In another game, league-leading Wendell (7-0-2, 23 points) topped Filer (6-7-0, 4-5-0, 12 points) by a 7-0 count.

In Monday’s Declo game, “Man of the Match” Jay Fitzgerald tallied his fourth three-goal hat trick of the season to go with single goals by Henry Everitt, Johnny Blackburn, Keegan Whitelaw, Roger Figge, Payton Anderson (first varsity goal) and Alex Schwartz.

Freshman Ella Viesturs tallied her third straight three-goal hat trick for the Cutthroat girls in their 8-0 triumph over Declo Monday—the sixth consecutive HDSC shutout for the league-leading Cutthroats (8-2-0, 8-0-0 for 24 points).

Other goals came from Hannah Conn (2), Molly Milgard (2) and Grace Cherp. Credited with assists were Autumn Fluetsch, Kate Rathfon, Grace Pepin and Lucy More. “Player of the Game” was Sara Runkel.

Locked in a logjam for second place are Bliss (6-1-1, 19 points), Filer (8-4-0, 6-3-0, 18 points) and Gooding (5-3-2, 17 points). Gooding tied 3-3 at Buhl (5-7-1, 4-5-1, 13 points) on Monday, while Filer edged host Wendell (1-8-0, 3 points) by a score of 3-2 in league play.
