Suhadolnik resigns from SV council

Mayor is vetting new candidates to fill the vacancy

Sun Valley City Councilman Franz Suhadolnik has submitted his resignation.

Suhadolnik was elected in 2012 following his outspoken criticism of former Councilman Nils Ribi as well as several years of political involvement in the city.

Suhadolnik was known for taking a no-nonsense approach to budgeting, often being the only dissenting vote to funding increases. Suhadolnik joined then-Councilman Bob Youngman in boycotting a joint meeting with the Ketchum City Council in October 2012 regarding the Sun Valley Marketing Alliance. That came after a stressed relationship between the two cities developed when the Sun Valley council voted to reduce Marketing Alliance funding by more than 25 percent.

“Effective September 30, I am hereby resigning my position on the Sun Valley City Council,” Suhadolnik wrote in a letter to Mayor Dewayne Briscoe on Sept. 24. “I apologize for the rather short notice but the sale of my home progressed in an expeditious manner beyond expectations.”

Suhadolnik said he and his wife wanted to find another residence within the Sun Valley city limits, but were unable to do so and therefore will relocate to another town.

Briscoe said in an interview that Suhadolnik was “a dedicated, hardworking and always prepared councilman.”

“He brought a strong philosophy of fiscal responsibility to the city and was always courteous and respectful of the council at our meetings and during debates,” Briscoe said.

In his resignation letter, Suhadolnik thanked the citizens of Sun Valley for the opportunity to serve.

“My time on the City Council has been a learning experience that I will value for years to come,” he wrote. “I appreciate the time with you as well as with my colleagues on the council and the excellent staff you have assembled in all city departments.”

By Idaho law, a replacement council member will be appointed by the mayor with the approval of all the remaining council members. Briscoe said he began the interview process with potential candidates and hopes to have a new council member nominated by the Oct. 2 council meeting at the latest.

“We have many important issues to consider, so an appointment of a qualified candidate is necessary as quick as possible,” Briscoe wrote.

The seat of the new council member will be up for election in November 2015.
