Wolverines square record winning 1-0 over Minico

Great Basin boys’ soccer race

Sophomore co-captain Alex Leon scored in the 46th minute assisted by junior Danny Graves and the Wood River High School boys’ varsity soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over the Minico Spartans at Rupert Tuesday.

Leon’s first goal of the season broke a scoreless halftime tie and enabled Wood River (5-5-0, 3-3-0 league) to sweep the season series between the two teams and grab its second Great Basin Conference road win of the 2014 campaign. Minico fell to 1-9-1 (1-5-0 league).

Wood River coach Luis Monjaras said about his team’s third shutout, “Overall it was a good performance by the boys.

“We outshot Minico 16-7 but could not make a good connection with the ball. Their sweeper also made a lot of saves for them on through balls.”

Wood River hosted Twin Falls (4-6-2, 3-3-0) Thursday in a match-up between two teams battling for third place in the six-team GBC. Host Twin Falls won the first meeting of the two teams 4-0 on Sept. 9.

Games coming up

Wood River visits Burley (2-7-0, 1-5-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 30 and has its final two regular-season games at home against the league’s top two teams.

They are Thursday, Oct. 2 against Canyon Ridge (11-1-0, 5-1-0) and Tuesday, Oct. 7 for “Senior Night” against Jerome (8-1-0, 5-1-0). The Jerome game will be played at 6:30 p.m. under the lights at the Phil Homer Stadium football field.

Canyon Ridge beat Twin Falls 3-1 Tuesday while Jerome blanked Burley 3-0.
