There are lots of fun things for kids to do that are somewhat unique to a mountain community such as the Wood River Valley. But sometimes participation takes money that families can’t afford. However, the Kids Mountain Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting outdoor youth activities, may have a solution to that dilemma.
The Kids Mountain Fund offers scholarships for participation in numerous organized mountain culture activities, including, but not limited to, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, backcountry skiing, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, kayaking, rafting, archery and climbing.
“It has to be an organized activity, and we’ll help them with the funding,” said Anne Marie Gardner, a member of the organization’s board of directors.
Other board members are Elizabeth Zellers, Jason Miller, Joshua Fields, Kaz Thea and Travis Jones.
Gardner explained that Kids Mountain Fund has its origins in sponsoring local youth ski teams, but when Sun Valley Co. absorbed the Wood River Ski Team last year, the organization found a new purpose for the funding it had been raising through donations and grants. The organization’s mission now is “to provide scholarship funds that support youth activities unique to mountain culture.”
To apply for a scholarship, kids and their parents are required to submit an essay.
“We really want them to explain what they want to do and why they want to do it,” Gardner said.
Information on the organization and how to apply for a scholarship is available at www.kidsmountainfund, or by calling Kaz Thea at (208) 720-7805.
The organization is accepting applications now for a scholarship cycle with a deadline of Oct. 14. Kids Mountain Fund also has scholarship cycles with deadlines on Jan. 15 and May 15.
Each application is reviewed by the board of directors and applicants are notified within 30 days of essay submission. The amount of scholarships is based upon cost and duration of the program, family need and the essays.
