Sun Valley boys outscore Buhl 8-0 on pitch

High Desert results from Wednesday

It’s looking more and more like a two-team race between the Community School Cutthroats and Wendell Trojans atop the High Desert Soccer Conference boys’ soccer loop.

Coach Richard Whitelaw’s league-leading Cutthroats (8-3-0, 6-1-0, 18 points) ended a brief two-game skid with a 7-0 home league victory over Buhl’s Tribe Wednesday at Browning Field, Elkhorn at Sun Valley.

And the Trojans (5-0-2, 17 points), who were 2-1 winners over the Cutthroats in Elkhorn Monday, handled the reigning State 3A champion Gooding Senators (4-3-2, 4-2-1, 13 points) by a 6-3 score on Wednesday.

Junior Jay Fitzgerald (20 goals season) tallied his third hat trick of the year and sixth of his three-year Cutthroat career—in the process reaching 50 career goals. Keegan Whitelaw added two goals and Tom Gillespie one.

Fitzgerald has now scored in 25 of the last 33 games.

Two Fitzgerald goals broke the game open in the first half, both coming on the always dangerous Cutthroat through balls. Roger Figge and Dehner Figge set him up for two of the goals. A Roger Figge corner kick gave Fitzgerald a header at the far post—and he left the ball for Whitelaw to clean up.

“Men of the Match” were Fitzgerald and Roger Figge.

Upper School falls trips have necessitated an 11-day break for the Cutthroats teams. The boys host Declo (0-7-0) Monday, Sept. 29 and have a big home game with Gooding Oct. 1.

SV girls blank Buhl 8-0

Coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroat girls (7-2-0, 7-0-0 league, 21 points) collected their fifth consecutive league shutout win 8-0 over Buhl Wednesday at the Sagewillow Farms field.

On a beautiful fall day, Cutthroat leading scorer Ella Viesturs (14 goals) pumped home three goals. Single goals came from Kate Rathfon, Grace Cherp, Ellie Polk, Molly Milgard and Grace Pepin.

Assists went to Viesturs and Ella Pepin were credited with assists. “Player of the Game” was freshman Skylar Cooley. Buhl fell to 3-7-0 (2-5-0 league).

The Cutthroats went into the extended school break with a three-point lead over Bliss (6-1-0, 18 points). A busy week of three games in four days after the break begins with home games against Declo (0-7-0) and Gooding (4-3-0, 4-3-0), then the Cutthroats visit Bliss Oct. 2.

Other High Desert teams are Filer (6-3-0, 4-2-0, 12 points) and Wendell (1-6-0, 3 points). Gooding won over Wendell on Wednesday afternoon.
