Fire burns on Salmon-Challis forest
A lightning-caused wildfire is burning about two miles east of U.S. Highway 93 midway between Challis and Salmon near Elk Bend on the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
According to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service, the Warm Spring Fire is being managed under a monitor strategy. The fire is burning in scattered Douglas fir among rock outcroppings and cliffs. Due to the rugged and inaccessible terrain, the Forest Service has decided that it isn’t safe to staff the fire with firefighters. A helicopter is being used to cool hot spots on the fire as needed.
Smoke and fire may be visible from the highway. Fire managers expect the fire to continue to burn throughout September or until a significant weather event occurs.
Forest visitors are advised to use caution if traveling near the Warm Spring Creek area. Hazards in the fire area can include rolling rocks and debris, falling trees and dense smoke.

Hospice seeks volunteers
Hospice & Palliative Care of the Wood River Valley is looking for volunteers. The organization’s trained volunteers provide companionship to people in their final days of life, and support patients’ family members and caregivers.

Training starts Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the hospice office, 507 First Ave. North, in Ketchum. Prospective volunteers must call the office first before attending the training: 726-8464.

City of Ketchum to hire water and energy advisor
At the Sept. 2 Ketchum City Council meeting, Ketchum City Administrator Suzanne Frick recommended that the council hire Dr. Wendy Pabich to assist in ongoing water and energy strategies in an advisory capacity. The recommendation was approved unanimously.
Pabich said Idaho is one of 14 states likely to face adversarial water conditions by mid-century, and the city believes hiring her will be proactive in curbing Idaho’s future water risks.
Frick recommended hiring Pabich at $3,500 a month, not to exceed $42,000 in the upcoming fiscal year. These figures include the cost of a Water and Energy Strategic Analysis and Plan, as well as Pabich’s advisory services.
Pabich doesn’t have planner’s insurance, so her contract was approved with the stipulation that she finds a provider.

Firewood-cutting permits available
Personal-use fuelwood permits, valid from Jan. 1 until Dec. 31 of the year purchased, are available from the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Permit holders can take up to 12 cords of personal-use firewood.  The permits cost $5 per cord and there is a $20, or four-cord, minimum purchase. A cord is the amount of tightly piled wood in a stack 4 feet high by 4 feet wide by 8 feet long.
Permits are available at local Salmon-Challis National Forest offices and several businesses.
Firewood cutting guidelines and further information on permits can be found on the Salmon-Challis National Forest website at  www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3791689.pdf.

Idaho PTV viewers get better signal
Idaho Public Television has arranged delivery of its television signal from Boise to Cox Cable in the Ketchum-Sun Valley areas by using the Syringa Network. The new delivery method began providing improved picture quality to Cox Cable subscribers the evening of Sept. 3, according to IdahoPTV Director of Technology Rich Van Genderen.
Until then, a signal from the IdahoPTV transmitter in Twin Falls was picked up on Bald Mountain by Cox Cable.
“The over-the-air signal from Twin Falls has not been extremely robust at the Cox receiver site on Bald Mountain,” Van Genderen said. “The direct feed should be a huge improvement for Cox subscribers in the Wood River Valley.”

Help identify poachers
People hunting in Idaho’s backcountry can be the best defense against poachers who steal game from all Idahoans, and those who help could pocket some extra cash.
Anyone who sees or suspects illegal activity is advised not to confront the individual; instead gather as much information as possible, including a description of the people, and their vehicles, and if possible license numbers and information about the location including landmarks, or GPS coordinates. Then, contact the Citizens Against Poaching hotline at 1-800-632-5999 (open 24 hours a day, seven days a week) or contact your local Fish and Game office or local law enforcement.
Those supplying information may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward if the information they provide leads to a citation.
