District seeks volunteers for textbook selection

Applications being accepted for 2 new committees

By TERRY SMITH
Express Staff Writer

The Blaine County School District is seeking community volunteers to assist with the selection of new textbooks and other instructional materials for social studies and visual and performing arts.
Applications are now available at the district website for service on either committee. To apply, visit www.blaineschools.org and scroll down the home page to the news entry regarding “instructional materials adoption committees.” Applications for either committee are due by Friday, Sept. 12.
Applicants must live within the boundaries of the school district, which encompasses most of Blaine County. Community members serving on the committees are asked to make a one-year commitment to attend monthly meetings and to use additional time for reading and research. Both committees will begin meeting later this month.
The district is seeking two community members for each committee, which will also be comprised of district staff. Applicants will be selected for service on the committees by the district superintendent, assistant superintendent and director of curriculum, teaching and learning.
After a thorough review of available textbooks and other instructional materials, the committees will be required to make recommendations for adoption to the district board of trustees.
“Parent and community involvement is key to student success,” said Heather Crocker, district director of communications. “The mission of the BCSD is to become a world-class, student focused community of teaching and learning. We appreciate the public’s willingness to commit the time, resources and energy to the instructional materials adoption process and to helping us fulfill our mission.”
