A Blaine County Community Drug Coalition has received a $400,000 grant from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services agency to further its campaign to eliminate substance abuse, including alcohol, by young people.
Coalition Executive Director Michael David reported in a news release that the grant, a Strategic Prevention Framework-State Incentive Grant, administered through the Idaho Office of Drug Policy, provides $100,000 per year for the next four years. The funding will be used to implement two parent-training programs offered through the Parent Project, “Loving Solutions” and “Changing Destructive Adolescent Behavior.”
The Loving Solutions program is designed specifically for parents raising “difficult” younger children ages 5-10. Changing Destructive Adolescent Behavior is intended to assist parents in dealing with older children.
“The primary reason for the program is to help parents with abnormally difficult children, and most importantly, to get these children off the path of high-risk behavior and lifelong struggles in the criminal justice system,” stated former coalition Executive Director Terry Basolo, who now serves as the organization’s grant coordinator.
“We wrote this grant in close consultation with Blaine County Probation Director Teresa Espedal, with the knowledge this parenting training intervention has been used with over a half-million youth in places as close as Mini-Cassia in southern Idaho and as far away as Los Angeles County,” Basolo stated. “Our hope is to work with our criminal justice and education partners to identify parents who would benefit from Parent Project.”
David said the programs are specifically intended to reduce family conflict, reduce juvenile crime, reduce recidivism and improve school attendance and performance.
The first year’s grant money became available in August. David said he intends to have two part-time trainers hired, trained and offering the programs this fall.
