Coach Kathy Whitworth’s Carey High School varsity volleyball team is off to a 2-2 start to its 2014 season entering Thursday’s Homecoming matches against the Rockland Bulldogs in the Carey gym.

The Panthers came from behind to beat last year’s State 1A Division 1 third-place Hagerman Pirates 25-15, 20-25, 15-13 Thursday to finish a busy triangular meet in Carey. Earlier in the night, Challis edged Carey 26-28, 25-13, 15-10.

Junior Clarissa Kirkland served the final four points for the Panthers and junior Medin Cenarrusa (7 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces) also served three winners during the comeback in the Hagerman victory.

“Our serving was a big factor,” said Whitworth.

Other Carey stat leaders were Natalie Villanueva (5 kills, 2 blocks, 7 digs, 2 aces), Kylie Castle (10 digs, 2 aces), Paige Koudelka (13 digs), Clarissa Kirkland (9 digs) and Hailee Johnson (7 digs).

Carey earned its first victory of the season last Tuesday 25-19, 23-25, 15-9 at home over Shoshone. Cenarrusa had 19 attacks with 4 kills and 9 digs. Castle added 13 digs to the win. Starting the triangular, Butte County beat Carey 25-14, 25-20.
