Cutthroats get upper hand on Gooding 2-1

Big High Desert win

Leading scorer Jay Fitzgerald punched home a second-half goal breaking a 1-1 tie and leading the Community School boys’ soccer team to a 2-1 High Desert Soccer Conference triumph at Gooding on Monday.

Gooding (3-2-1, 3-1-1 league) is the two-time defending State 3A tournament champ and has won three state titles in five years. The Senators are league champions two years running, and the Cutthroats had been winless (0-4-2) against Gooding over the past two seasons.

Tom Gillespie tallied a first-half goal for the Cutthroats (6-1-0, 4-0-0). Defender Jack Swanson was coach Richard Whitelaw’s “Man of the Match,” just five days after scoring his first-ever varsity goal, a penalty kick against Declo.

“A very impressive performance against the back-to-back state champions and to dominate on their field,” said Whitelaw. His team, playing its fourth game in seven days, bounced back splendidly after its 4-0 loss to Wood River Saturday on the Hailey pitch.

The Cutthroats host Filer (4-3-0, 2-2-0) today, Wednesday, and visit Burley on Saturday.

4-0 win puts Cutthroat girls back on track

Community School junior goalkeeper Olivia Ott posted her second shutout of the season as the Cutthroat girls’ soccer team posted a 4-0 High Desert Soccer Conference road triumph over the Gooding Senators Monday afternoon.

Ott made three saves including a penalty kick stop as coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroats bounced back from their 4-0 home loss to 4A Wood River on Saturday. Feldman’s “Player of the Game” was junior Autumn Fluetsch.

Freshman Ella Viesturs scored twice for the winners and has now scored in five of the six Cutthroat games. Sophomore Ellie Polk had her first goal, as did freshman Grace Pepin. Grace Cherp assisted. Gooding (3-2-0) lost its second High Desert contest after beating Buhl 2-1 and Declo 6-2.

The league-leading Cutthroats (4-2-0, 4-0-0 league) finish a busy stretch of five games in eight days when they host the Filer Wildcats (5-2-0, 3-1-0) in an important league game today, Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Sagewillow Farms.

Filer boasted 7-2, 5-0 and 2-1 wins over Wendell, Declo and Buhl before falling 6-0 to Bliss (3-1-0) on Monday, Sept. 8.
