Valley Club crowns golf champions

Club, Senior and Super Seniors

It was a busy week at The Valley Club where six days of golf competition crowned 2014 club champions.

Repeat winners in finals

Carmen Bradley and Marilyn Celano each captured their fourth Valley Club match play championships Sunday, Sept. 7, capping a three-day competition played at scratch.

Bradley emerged victorious 7 & 6 over Baird Gourlay in Sunday’s finals on the North/West course.

In the morning semi-finals that went to the 18th hole, defending champion Bradley advanced 1-up over two-time club champion David Cropper, and Gourlay prevailed 1-up over another former club winner, Neil Bradshaw.

Sixteen players made up the Championship Bracket of the Men’s Division, with 18-hole matches played Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6. Winner of the net flight was Jerry Graham over John Kanellitsas.

Marilyn Celano won 2 & 1 over former club champion Suzanne Williams in the Women’s Division.

Finals for seniors

The Valley Club held its annual Senior and Super Senior Club Championships for men and women Tuesday through Thursday.

Men’s Senior champion was Jim Holman. Winning the Super Senior class was Richard Shelton. Leading the women were Suzanne Williams and Gundl Haskell.

Valley Club Director of Golf Stoney Brown said, “To determine the champions, a match play format was used and was played at scratch. For those wishing to compete outside the match play brackets, a stroke play event was offered.

“The Senior Division was open to those players who had reached the age of 55, while the Super Senior Division was open to those players who have reached the milestone of 70.”

Jim Holman was crowned Senior Champion, defeating David Cropper 3 & 2 in the final round. Richard Shelton was the Super Senior Champion winning a close match to Dick Toomey which went to the 18th hole.

Suzanne Williams won the Women's Senior Championship, besting defending champion Marilyn Celano by a 3 & 2 margin. Gundl Haskell captured the Women's Super Senior Division, played at stroke play.
