Homecoming with Rockland Friday

The Panther defense swarmed, and senior quarterback Nate Adamson’s offense piled up 398 yards in Carey High School’s 60-6 eight-man football win over North Gem’s Cowboys at Bancroft Friday.

Adamson (7 carries, 103 yards) scored four touchdowns including a 72-punt return and the Panthers out-rushed North Gem 337-101 in a matinee matching Sawtooth Conference West Division (Carey) and East (North Gem) foes.

“We got off the bus quickly and did good work in the first half,” said Carey coach Lane Kirkland. “We got things going early and our running game did a fine job.”

His unbeaten Panthers have outscored opponents 76-6 in the first half to date.

A big part of the Panther running game was senior running back Corban Johnson (a game-high 122 rushing yards on 11 carries). “Corban hit the holes quickly,” Kirkland said.

Carey built a 52-0 halftime lead and finished the game with eight touchdowns—four by Adamson, one by Joe Parke on a 41-yard pass from Adamson, one apiece by Zach Olsen and Toby Whitworth, and one by Parker Gamino. He fell on a ball in the end zone after a Chris Peck punt block.

Whitworth, a sophomore, and freshman Gamino scored their first-ever varsity touchdowns. The Panthers have now out-gained opponents 820-318 in two games, Adamson notching 579 total yards.

Carey (2-0, 0-0 West Division) added to its successful day with a 36-0 win in Friday’s junior varsity preliminary. The North Gem varsity fell to 0-2 this year.

The Panthers host Rockland for Homecoming Friday, Sept. 12 with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Rockland (2-7 last year) has opened the season 2-0 with a 40-6 win at Richfield and 47-0 home success over Camas County. For Carey, senior Matt Whitworth (appendicitis) is due back Friday night.

Coach Kirkland suggested that the combination of Homecoming and Rockland’s unbeaten record should be plenty of motivation for the Panthers on Friday at Derrick Parke Memorial Field.
