Although she’s a ninth grader, Hailey’s Kirsys Campbell has already logged many miles in middle school and club running competitions. Just last Friday, the Wood River High School freshman won her first-ever high school event.

Campbell (21:51) won the 4A/3A girls’ varsity race of the hilly and challenging Sun Valley Classic 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) at Sagewillow, Elkhorn. There were 540 runners taking part including 20 high school and 16 middle school teams.

The winning margin for Campbell was 65 seconds over Filer’s Abby Bitzenburg (22:56). Campbell had the fastest time of all 136 girls on the 5k course. Fifth place of 58 runners went to Wood River senior Grace Gorham (23:53).    It was Campbell’s first competition with the Wood River team. On Aug. 28, she competed as an individual in the Saucony XC Scramble at Journey’s End Golf Course in Shelley and placed seventh of 166 girls at 21:30, 67 seconds back of winner Rachel McGovern of Pocatello (20:23).

Two Community School boys did very well on Friday’s high-altitude course situated at 6,000 feet elevation.

Cutthroat freshman Henry Raff (19:01) took first place in the 1A/2A boys’ varsity race at 19:01, seventh-fastest time of 200 boys running at 5k. And Cutthroat junior Leo Lukens (18:43) was the 1A/2A boys’ junior varsity winner with the fifth-fastest time all day.

Top boys’ time was posted by 4A/3A winner Chantz Lund of Kimberly (18:15). Wood River junior Ryan Anderson (20:35) placed 12th and freshman Landon Nurge (20:39) was 14th of 69 boys in the 4A/3A varsity race.
