Four named to Intermountain ski shrine

Induction Sept. 25 at Park City

     The Alf Engen Ski Museum at Park City, Utah announced Thursday, Sept. 4 that there are four individuals who will be inducted into the Will and Jean Pickett Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame at Park City on Thursday, Sept. 25.

     The class of 2014 consists of:

     John Aalberg, a Norway native, All-American in Nordic skiing and cross-country running for the University of Utah, a member of the U.S. Olympic Nordic Teams in 1992 and 1994, and venue designer/director of Olympic and Paralympic Nordic venues for the 2002 and 2010 Winter Games.

     Wilby M. Durham,  (1913-2000), a founder of the Deseret News Ski School, which introduced the sport to tens of thousands of youngsters  at no cost and was instrumental in the establishment of the Olympic Club, forerunner of Ski Utah, which sought to boost ski tourism and host the Olympic Winter Games.

     Spencer F. Eccles, anOgden, Utah, native and University of Utah All-American skier, banker, philanthropist and prominent benefactor of numerous organizations. Eccles was first alternate to the U.S. 1958 FIS World Championship ski team; placed third in the Canadian National Championship slalom and second in the U.S. National Slalom.  In 2002, the International Olympic Committee awarded him its highest honor, the Pierre de Coubertin Medal, recognizing his exceptional service to the Olympic movement.

     Harold Seeholzer, (1902-1968), a visionary and ski area pioneer who learned to ski on hand-made skis and founded Beaver Mountain Ski Area in Utah’s Logan Canyon in 1952. Beaver Mountain holds the distinction of being the oldest ski area in the U.S. continuously owned by the same family.

     The 13th annual induction ceremony will take place at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s Center of Excellence at Quinn’s Junction on the eastern skirt of Park City. In previous years the event was held at the Joe Quinney Winter Sports Center at Utah Olympic Park.  The change of venue is aimed at accommodating attendees whose numbers are increasing.

     The event will begin with a 6 p.m. reception, followed by dinner and the inductions, said Connie Nelson, Executive Director of the Alf Engen Ski Museum. The museum houses the 58-member hall of fame exhibit.

     Reservations cost $100 per person ($2,000 for sponsorship status and table of 10 reservations) and will be accepted until Sept. 12 at connie@utaholympiclegacy.com, and by phone at 435-658-4240. Reservations may also be made online at www.engenmuseum.org.

     Inductees to the Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame to date are:

     2002: Junior Bounous, Zane A. Doyle, Alf M. Engen, Sverre Engen, Karre “Corey” Engen, Gretchen K. Fraser, W. Averell Harriman and S. Joseph “Joe” Quinney.

     2003: Stein Eriksen, Bill Briggs and Axel Andreason.

     2004: Pepi Steigler, “Mayor” George Watson, Suzy Harris Rytting, Bill Lash, Bill Spencer and Edward L. Scott.

     2005:  Edgar B. Stern, Jr., Neil Rafferty, M. Earl Miller, Lou Lorenz, Keith Lange and James R. Gaddis.

     2006: Marv Melville, Cal McPhie, Dick Movitz, Dev Jennings, Jack Reddish and Marthenius (Mark, M.A.) Strand.

     2007:  Ted Johnson, Paul McCollister, Woody Anderson, K Smith, Pete Karns and Margo Walters-McDonald.

     2008:  Alvin F. Cobabe, Albert “Sunny” Korfanta and Pat Miller.

     2009: Richard D. (Dick) Bass, Siegfried (Sigi) Engl, Alan K. Engen and Mike C. Korologos.

     2010:  Peter S. Ecker, Claude F. Jones, Karen Korfanta and Gregory C. Thompson.

     2011: Kit DesLauriers, William (Bill) Levitt, Raymond R. Steward and Dean Robert (Bob) Theobald.
