Putting for the mutts is today at Sun Valley

    The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley is staging its 2014 “Putts for Mutts” fundraiser Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 3 p.m. at Sun Valley Golf Club’s Sawtooth Putting course.

     Plans call for 18 foursomes to take part. Register at 2 p.m. Cost is $50 for early registration, and $60 for late registration on Wednesday.

Harriman Boulder Dash 10-miler is Sunday, Sept. 7

     Get a leg up on the 2014 Wood River Valley Trail Run point series by joining the Harriman Boulder Dash 10-mile Trail Run Sunday, Sept. 7 starting at 10 a.m. from the Baker Creek parking lot 13 miles north of Ketchum. You’ll run on the Harriman Trail to the finish line and post-party including lunch at Galena Lodge.

     Register ($25 online) at athlete360.com. You can also sign up on Sunday from 8:30-9:45 a.m. at Baker Creek for $30, including post-race lunch. Runners should park at Baker Creek and take advantage of the shuttle service provided by host Galena Lodge.

     Sunday’s event is the first of the three-event Wood River Valley Trail Run Series that includes the Nasty 9 nine-mile single-track run Saturday, Sept. 13 and the Baldy Hill Climb Saturday, Sept. 27.

VikingMan Olympic triathlon

     Hailey’s Susan Gundy (3.44:16) placed second in the Women’s 55-59 age class in the 36.1-mile VikingMan Olympic distance triathlon Aug. 23 at Heyburn near Burley. Gundy’s splits were 33:50 for the 1500-meter swim, 1.49:53 for the 29-mile bike ride and 1.13:29 for the 6.2-mile run. She was 14th of the 18 female finishers.

 

BCRD offers fall soccer for middle school boys

     The Blaine County Recreation District announced Thursday that it will offer a recreational fall youth soccer program for local boys in the seventh and eighth grades.

     BCRD Sports and Leagues director Brad Musbach said the newly-offered program will need a minimum of 18 players with a positive attitude who are committed to training and improving their soccer skills.

     Practices are scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-5:30 p.m. at Nelson Field next to Hailey Elementary School. The dates are Monday, Sept. 8 through Wednesday, Oct. 22. A Wood River Middle School bus will drop the boys off for their practices.

Golf aces at The Valley Club

    August was a busy month for holes-in-one at The Valley Club, where golfers made five aces over a 15-day period:

     On Aug. 16, Steve Dorinson aced the seventh hole of the West Nine using an 8-iron from the Black Tees. Witnesses were Jerry Graham and Dillon Witmer.

     On Aug. 20, John Haskell aced the sixth hole of the South Nine using an 8-iron from 122 yards. Witnesses were Sam Armacost and Harold Tollerup.

     On Aug. 23, Lanny McLean aced the second hole of the South Nine using a 7-iron from 137 yards. His grandson was the witness.

     On Aug. 29, Susan Lovett aced the second hole of the South Nine using a 7-iron from the Red Tees. Witnesses were Sheila Fryberger, JoAnn Stevens and Barbara Stephens.
